An illustration is quite different from other art forms like paintings, sketches, drawings, or the fine arts. Although most often found in children’s books, illustrations are not just confined to the world of the young. They serve a much larger purpose and have various functions in our adult world.
The main purpose of illustration is to get a message across to the reader or viewer allowing them to better understand the context of a story. Illustrations can be absolutely breathtaking, but their role is to elaborate and clarify the meaning of the textual content or message. Good illustrations are intended to transform a simple or even a rather mundane message into an exciting and fascinating one.
Whether it’s a children’s book, or an e-book written for an adult audience, I absolutely love to bring it to life through the art of illustration!
